Flight Log #19 - Planetary Cruising system is live!

Published on 9/21/2026

Pilots,
You can cruise & land anywhere now!

Ships Landed at Moon HQ Quadrant

Alpha 5.5.0 went live on Saturday, and it is the biggest release we have ever shipped. Your ships fly over planetary terrain in real time — alone or alongside other pilots — and you put them down exactly where you choose. Beside a deposit. On a ridge. Next to somebody else's Vanguard.
It also changes mining: you now have to fly to the ore. Every ship has a Mining Range, and nothing starts until you are inside it.
That matters this month, because Bulla Autumnalis closes on 13 October — 22 days from today — and Gradus 15 takes about three weeks of steady flying. The Prospero Messoria waits at the top. The ore you need is somewhere specific now. Go and get it.

The Zero-G planetary cruise tutorial

▶ Watch the cruise tutorial (4½ min)
Everything, start to finish: using search to find Sulfur, a manual landing, reading the terrain ahead, watching the damage readouts, touching down on the deposit and checking mining range. Then the easy way — auto-landing at the Moon spaceport — and a manual cruise out to the ore.

The one thing to understand before you fly: Q and V are not the same key.

Hover above your spot, release with Q, let the descent build toward your Maximum Landing Speed, press V, and ride it down. Keep PSD and PAD green and you land without a scratch.
Take a scout first. Learn the keys on a ship you can afford to bend.

Our first scored review: 8/10

Poland's Portal MMO published a full review of Zero-G — the first scored review in the project's history — and gave it 8 out of 10.

"No need to be the best combat pilot. You can be a probe manufacturer."

"Information is becoming a resource. Data has value because it saves other players time."

They were right about what is wrong, too: still alpha, textures that repeat, limited surface variety, features promised rather than delivered. Every one of those is true, and you know it better than any reviewer. An 8 from someone who noticed the repeating textures is worth more than a 10 from someone who did not look.

The Cartographer's Call — final standings

It closed on 17 September. A dead heat for second. And the number we are proudest of: 18 of the 20 pilots who enrolled put points on the board. One clear task with a reachable first step, and nearly everyone played. Thank you — that result is shaping how every expedition after it is designed.

The terrain article made Gamedev.js Weekly

On 11 September, Gamedev.js Weekly carried our write-up on how Zero-G builds planetary terrain from NASA data — the ground you are now landing on. Writing it found a real bug: the generator was building 48 terrain chunks where only ten fit on screen. Fixing it made terrain generation five times faster. Read the article
